It is VERY IMPORTANT that you read the preparation requirements for the type of ultrasound that you are having.
You must follow the preparation requirements before attending your appointment to avoid a costly cancellation or an ineffective scan.

Pelvic/Renal/Pregnancy Ultrasound

External Pelvic/Renal

– Requires a full bladder. 
– Drink 2-3 glasses of water 1 hour before the appointment and hold the bladder till the examination is finished.

Internal (Transvaginal) Pelvic

– Recommended for 18+ years. 
– Consent required.

Early Pregnancy (Up to 16 weeks)

– Requires a full bladder. 
– Drink 2-3 glasses of water 1 hour before the appointment and hold the bladder till the examination is finished.

Pregnancy (Over 16 weeks)

– Drink water for hydration. 
– No full bladder required.

Abdomen/Aorta/Renal Arteries/Leg Arteries

Abdomen

– Fast for 6 hours (no food, drink, smoking, or chewing).  
– Small sips of water are allowed.  
– Continue medication as usual.

Renal Arteries

Fast for 6 hours (no food, drink, smoking, or chewing) prior to the exam to minimize bowel gas that may obscure arteries. 
– Small sips of water are allowed.  
– Continue medication as usual.

Aorta or Leg Arteries

Fast for 6 hours (no food, drink, smoking, or chewing) prior to the exam to minimize bowel gas that may obscure arteries. 
– Small sips of water are allowed.  
– Continue medication as usual.

Interventional Ultrasound

– Specific instructions will be provided based on the procedure.
– If taking blood thinners, inform receptionist when booking.
– Bring relevant previous reports.
– Inform radiologist about any allergies.

Ultrasounds NOT Requiring Preparation

Breast Ultrasound

– No preparation required before attending ultrasound appointment.

Thyroid Ultrasound

– No preparation required before attending ultrasound appointment.

Testes Ultrasound

– No preparation required before attending ultrasound appointment.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (muscles, bones, and joints)

– No preparation required before attending ultrasound appointment.
