Lumps, bumps, and mystery swellings are quite common, and mostly they’re just benign cysts. However, when you notice a new lump under your skin and can’t figure out why it’s there, it’s natural to get worried. And if it starts increasing in size or becomes painful, it can cause anxiety and frustration, too. It might not be anything serious, or it might be a sign of some underlying issue in the body that needs attention. While many lumps are harmless, your doctor may recommend a lump ultrasound to examine the area more closely and better understand what may be causing it.
Got a new lump under your skin that your doctor wants to examine? At Insight Diagnostic Imaging, we provide lump ultrasound services using modern ultrasound technology to examine soft tissues beneath the skin. We also offer bulk bill lump ultrasound services for those with a valid referral and Medicare eligibility.
Not sure what an ultrasound for lump means and what it actually checks? A lump ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that assesses a lump, knot, or swelling beneath the skin, especially in areas of concern like the breast, thyroid, or soft tissue. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the tissues in the area being examined. Since it does not use radiation, unlike some other tests, ultrasound scans are a commonly used imaging option for examining soft tissues.
An ultrasound for lump maps its exact shape, size, and depth, checks the blood flow, and determines whether it is solid or filled with fluid. It can help your doctor understand whether it’s a harmless growth or something that can become a serious issue by showing the precise location, appearance, shape, and composition of the lumps.
Lumps or knots can occur in many parts of the body, including the neck, back, armpit, breast, groin, arms and legs, and abdomen. So, do all such lumps need an ultrasound scan? Not really. Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound if you notice a new or persistent lump and its cause is unclear. For example, if you’ve noticed a lump in the back of your neck, your doctor may want to check the tissues beneath the skin. Similarly, if an existing or recurring lump starts increasing in size or grows painful, swollen, or changes appearance, it can again be a cause for concern, prompting your doctor to order an ultrasound.
When you want to know the cause of a knot or lump, it’s important to first know its features. An ultrasound can provide detailed images of the soft tissues surrounding a lump, which can help your doctor identify features such as:
What these scans show can help your doctor determine whether your lump needs further monitoring, other tests, or more scans for further details.
Not every lump requires an ultrasound. So how do you know if the lump you have needs to be checked? Your GP or specialist will first do a physical check and consider factors such as where the lump is located, how long you’ve had it, its size and appearance, and whether you have any associated symptoms. If they’re unsure about its cause or believe a scan can provide more insight or useful information, they may refer you for an ultrasound.
A lump ultrasound can provide important information about the lump, but it does not always provide a definitive diagnosis on its own. Your doctor will consider your ultrasound results alongside your medical history, physical examination, and any other tests that may be needed.
